So you want to be a Community Manager

My first newsletter, a new blog post, and ramblings. It is terrifying!

Hello!

Welcome to my first newsletter. I'm used to writing these for studios, but writing one of these for myself is ... weird. Weird!! Forgive any wonkiness as I get used to these.

Anywho, this first email comes with a gift: content!

New blog post: Becoming a Video Game Community Manager

This is a question I get constantly - how do you become a community manager? Do you have any tips for landing your first job? So I wrote something that would hopefully be helpful for beginners in the space, or as thinking fodder for pros.

I address the skills people usually ask for, what to write if you don't have "professional" experience, resources, and a peek at my own verrrrry old resume!

Community Activity

Here's your first community skill testing activity to flex your community muscles! These won't always have one right answer - sometimes they'll be reflections, activities, and/or ways to think about community. So....

Situation: Someone posted their complaints about you in your Discord, and it's quickly filling up space in your community:

Why is this game delayed? Are you kidding me? I backed this game on Kickstarter. Are you unable to make a game properly?

The question: What's the response you'd write to this and why? (It's useful to understand why you write something too!)

Feel free to email me back with your answer - I'd love to read it. :) My own answer will be in the next newsletter, plus the next community activity!

Community Chatter

A round up of good things I've seen around the games community!

Alright, that's it for meeeeeeeeeee!

Hope you enjoyed this newsletter, let me know if you have any feedback, and have a good one.

Community Dev Newsletter #22 🤠 Happy almost end of year aaAAHHH!!!! Before we dive into this - I'm taking a winter vacation from the newsletter in December, so the next newsletter will be in February. 🥰 I've been chatting with several community managers about portfolios recently. While it's not necessary, it did get me thinking about what one would look like. (It's pretty common for social media managers, for example.) Because I don't like talking about things I haven't done myself, I thought...
